Featuring a Rap Collective, Beat Squad, and massed Primary and Secondary School choirs, the diversity of music-making on offer at Ark schools is clear, whilst the support and opportunity for young people to get involved in that music-making is strong.

The Food of Love: Epsom Chamber Choir

A MUSICAL FEAST FROM EPSOM CHAMBER CHOIR

Epsom Chamber Choir’s summer concert takes place at St Martin’s Church, Epsom on Saturday 28th June. Titled ‘The Food of Love’, the programme is inspired by the words of – you’ve guessed it - William Shakespeare, interpreted by rather more contemporary composers George Shearing, Leonard Bernstein and Finnish composer Mäntyjärvi.  Jazz legend Shearing’s uplifting Songs & Sonnets take centre stage along with Mäntyjärvi’s setting of texts from Shakespeare plays and a medley of music from Bernstein’s magical update of Romeo and Juliet - West Side Story.  The Shakespeare link is maintained with music by near contemporary Purcell and a selection of English madrigals, sung by small groups within the choir. They then swing firmly into modern times with Eric Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machineand a couple of toe-tapping Gershwin arrangements.Epsom Chamber Choir is a highly-regarded choir regularly performing ambitious and exciting programmes in St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom.

They will be directed in this concert by guest conductor Tristan Weymes and accompanied by pianist Stephen Ridge.

Mahler's Eighth Symphony

Tiffin Boys’ Choir, under Ed Gardner

Three choirs, eight starry singers and one of the largest orchestras ever put on stage: there’s a reason why Mahler’s Eighth is often called the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’.

The form of the piece, setting the candescent medieval poem Veni Creator Spiritusalongside the lyrical last scene of Goethe’s Faust is in itself radical and mysterious.

At the core of the piece is a vast choir who seem to represent the whole human race in a passionate prayer for change but Mahler imagined they stood for something even greater: ‘Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to ring and resound,’ he challenged. ‘There are no longer human voices, but planets and suns revolving.’

Exaggeration? Judge for yourself. Mahler’s Eighth Symphony is quite simply one of the most overwhelming experiences that music has to offer, and here it’s made even more staggering by a creative team headed up by director Tom Morris, with video design by Tal Rosner and lighting by Ben Ormerod.

This concert has been specially developed with the Southbank Centre. It is commissioned and produced by the Southbank Centre and London Philharmonic Orchestra, and generously supported by a group of individual donors.

London Schools Symphony Orchestra: Holst The Planets

The London Schools Symphony Orchestra takes you on an epic tour of the orchestra before reaching for the stars with Holst's cosmic masterpiece.

Benjamin Britten’s educational masterpiece has inspired and initiated generations of young musicians around the world with its complex yet comprehensive navigation of the symphony orchestra and its instantly recognisable variations.

Described as ‘Britain’s greatest living composer of art songs’, Ian Venables’s song cycle takes its words from the late 19th century poet John Addington Symonds. For this performance the songs have been specially orchestrated by the conductor Matthew Lynch.

Further from home, Holst’s musical exploration of the solar system is packed with tunes that have laid the stylistic for a century of film music. Even if you have never heard of The Planets you will know the tunes.
